Yesterday, the Eclipse Virgo project was given a last minute reprieve, as several people put their names forward to prevent Eclipse Virgo from being archived at Eclipse. InfoQ caught up with Glyn Normington, the ex-project lead, to find a bit more about its history and its future.

SAP's OSGi-Based Java PaaS Achieves Java Enterprise Edition 6 Web Profile Compatibility
SAP AG announced on the 16th December that its NetWeaver Cloud product, a Java-based platform-as-a-service, has achieved Java EE 6 Web Profile Compatibility. NetWeaver Cloud runs on top of OSGi using Eclipse Virgo as the OSGi container. The product includes an Eclipse-based SDK for building, testing, and deploying applications in the cloud.

Eclipse Virgo Released
The inaugural version of Eclipse Virgo was released today, including the Eclipse Gemini Web component. Despite these being the first release under the Eclipse moniker, they are the natural evolution of the well-regarded Spring DM Server. Read on to find out what's important about this release.

Eclipse Virgo Project Approved
The Eclipse Virgo project has been approved at Eclipse, and provisioning and initial code import will be happening in the next week or two. Eclipse Virgo is the new name for SpringSource dm Server, which is also undergoing a license change from GPL to EPL to make it more acceptable for others to build and redistribute. Modular applications are the way of the future, and Eclipse Virgo will be key.

Bundle.update: The Year of Modularity
A lot has happened since the last Bundle.update. SpringSource dm Server becomes an EPL project at Eclipse; a new book on OSGi and Equinox has been published; the OSGi Enterprise Expert Group is nearing completion; WebSphere has released an alpha based on Apache Aries; Maven Tycho is being used at Eclipse; Nimble facilitates OSGi runtimes, and ECF Remote Services are now complete.

Bundle.update: OSGi in Java EE, JSR 294 Marked Inactive
Since the last bundle.update, a number of interesting events have occurred in the OSGi and modular Java space. JSR 294 has been (automatically) marked as inactive, the Enterprise Expert Group has released draft 4, WebSphere will allow direct running of OSGi applications and upcoming OSGi conferences have early bird discounts and call for speakers finishing soon.

Keynote: The Future of Java Innovation
In the opening keynote at SpringOne Europe 2009, Rod Johnson wondered if Java innovation is going to be stifled by latest Oracle acquisition and expressed his belief that Java will continue to evolve outside of Sun as it has done for the last few years.
