  • Jetbrains announced appCode (CIDR) EAP - an Objective-C IDE for Mac and iOS development

  • Windows Installer XML (WiX) 3.5 Makes Component Authoring Easier

    Windows Installer XML (WiX) 3.5 focuses on an updated version of Votive, the tool which allows developers to create WiX installers via the Visual Studio IDE. In addition to several bug fixes, WiX 3.5 improves to both Component Authoring and Major Upgrade functionality.

  • Tasktop 2.0 Supports Task Federation and Cross-Repository Agile Planning

    The latest version of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) collaboration tool Tasktop supports task federation, cross-repository Agile planning, and new connectors to other ALM tools like HP Agile Accelerator and SmartBear CodeCollaborator. Tasktop team last week released version 2.0 of the software which also has integration with Hudson CI tool.

  • HTML 5 and CSS 3 Support for Expression Web

    Microsoft has released an update to Expression Web 4 to support HTML 5 and CSS 3 development. This update, part of Service Pack 1, is only a partial solution; it offers IntelliSense and error-checking support but with only partial preview support. This update also includes expanded support for PHP IntelliSense.

  • Cloud IDE for Java Launched by eXo

    eXo has announced the launch of a new Cloud IDE, which is based on a hosted development environment that facilitates social coding, the collaborative development of gadgets and mashups that can be deployed directly to any Java PaaS. This includes multi-tenancy, social and collaboration features.

  • LightSwitch Beta 2 Adds Support for Windows Azure

    Visual Studio LightSwitch Beta 2 allows publishing an application to Windows Azure, has improved runtime and design-time performance, better runtime UI, and allows any authenticated Windows user to run the application.

  • Orion – Eclipse for the Web

    Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, announced in January a new tool named “Orion”. This “brand new adventure for Eclipse”, as Mike puts it, will provide a browser-based environment for open tool integration. Beginning of February the team released milestone M5 of Orion.

  • Ruby Dropped in Netbeans 7

    Ruby/RoR in NetBeans made headlines three years ago, but after Sun was acquired by Oracle there where fears that support for dynamic languages would suffer, as this IDE would be downsized. This has become a reality, since as of version 7, NetBeans will no longer support Ruby.

  • Appcelerator Buys Aptana

    Appcelerator, the company behind the Titanium application development platform, has acquired Aptana. Aptana Studio 3, the Eclipse-based IDE with tightly integrated support for JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Ruby, Python and PHP, is due to be released this quarter.

  • Mono Releases Mono Packager for Mac

    Earlier this week, the Mono folks released the Mono Packager for OSX and refreshed the MonoMac library and templates. Developers can now create self-contained Mono applications which can be distributed via the Apple App Store.

  • MonoDroid Bridges .NET with Android

    MonoDroid brings the whole Mono VM to Android, enabling .NET developers to write applications for Google’s mobile OS. Developers now can write applications targeting iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7.

  • MonoDevelop is the Third IDE for F#

    MonoDevelop has become the third IDE to support Microsoft’s F# language. With .NET support essentially dead on the Eclipse IDE and WebMatrix being targeted for causal developers, it is likely to be the last IDE to add support for it in the foreseeable future.

  • JetBrains Releases Intellij IDEA 10

    This month, JetBrains announced it released Intellij IDEA 10, a major upgrade to its integrated development environment. As a major revision, the new Intellij has a long list of changes and improvements. A selection of the improvements include: performance improvements, enhanced support for various frameworks and technologies, improved version control support.

  • A Mono Update

    Last week Miguel de Icaza published a long post listing all the work the Mono team at Novell has been doing since the move to GitHub in July 2010. Much of the new work has been around language development and MonoDevelop improvements.

  • The Much Needed Service Pack for VS 2010 is Almost Ready

    Visual Studio 2010’s first service pack is nearing completion. According to Brian Harry, the betas for .NET 4 SP1, VS 2010 SP1, and TFS 2010 SP1 together represent between 800 and 1,000 bug fixes. Also included is a new help system and improved support for Silverlight, x64, and .NET 3.5.
